Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors that work by blocking the body’s ability to produce nitric oxide, a chemical that relaxes smooth muscles.
Sildenafil is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The drug has not been approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration.
